The Democratic Alliance (DA) is forging ahead with its planned protest march to the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 25 January.

DA TO HIT THE STREETS ON WEDNESDAY

When the opposition party announced the protest earlier this month, it said Luthuli House was the target because it “is the scene of the crime that the ANC continues to perpetrate against the people of South Africa through permanent stage 6 load shedding and the latest 18.65% electricity tariff increase.”

On Tuesday, the DA announced its supporters would also be marching to the ANC Provincial Offices in Cape Town as part of the “Power to the People March”. The party has been encouraging members of the broader public to join the demonstrations.

Last Friday, a civil rights movement, Not In My Name International, marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria over load shedding and the NERSA-approved tariff hike.

“SA is already in a regressive economy and with this current load shedding we are experiencing, the ordinary people will not be able to sustain this for very long. This is the reason we are coming out today,” said the organisation’s secretary-general, Themba Maseko.

Meanwhile, in Cape Town, activist group #UniteBehind has launched an Electricity Action Campaign to “fix Eskom” and demand accountability from the State. Civil society groups are mobilising the public for a march in the City when President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 9 February.
