Abandoned Giyani Water Project claims a life

On Saturday, Nsuku Mhlongo was playing with his friends close to the trench when he unfortunately fell into it and drowned. The site has been abandoned for years and a few months ago, it seemed as if it would never be competed after Khato Civils — the company that won the bid to complete the project — was forced to retrench more than 1 000 workers due to a lack of funds.

The Giyani Water Project was introduced by former president Jacob Zuma back in 2014. At the time, Mokonyane was the Minister of Water and Sanitation.

DA targets Nomvula Mokonyane and Provincial MEC

The mandate of the project, according to the DA, would have been her responsibility to oversee. Furthermore, as reported by Eyewitness News, the party will lay a similar complaint on the province’s MEC for Cooperative Governance, Jerry Ndou.

The DA’s premier in Limpopo, Jacques Smalle stated that an event of this nature, as unfortunate as it is, was always likely to happen in that area.

“For far too long we’ve seen incomplete projects. In November 2018, we visited the area and saw the infrastructure works; there are at least about 13 uncovered holes within the area.” he said.

The department of water and sanitation, in response to the news of the boy’s death, announced that it had received R3-billion from treasury to resume and complete the project.

Khato Civils, however, could not ascertain when the project would resume.
