Crocodile killer: KZN man arrested for killing reptile [PICS]

The 32-year-old accused recently appeared in a KZN court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of game meat.

A man was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal after the Hluhluwe Stock Theft unit received a tip-off about an individual that allegedly killed a crocodile on Saturday, 9 April.

MAN ALLEGEDLY KILLS CROCODILE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqqobile Gwala said police officers and game rangers headed to KwaJobe in Hluhluwe where they found the remains of a crocodile along with the skeletal remains of various animals.

“The investigation revealed that on 4 April 2022, the crocodile was shot and killed at Budlwini area in Hluhluwe,” said Gwala.

The officers also confiscated a gun and ammunition and arrested the suspect – 32-year-old Sphamandla Mhlongo – accused of killing the crocodile.

Mhlongo made his first appearance before the Ubombo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 April on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and the possession of game meat.

The accused was released on bail of R500. His next court appearance is expected on 6 May.
