Cresta: Terrified shoppers flee, as bullets fly in Johannesburg mall [video]

Chaos erupted at the Cresta Mall in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, after a group of armed robbers shot-up an iPhone store at the complex. A security guard has been “seriously injured” in the gunfight.

Just after 16:00, a hail of bullets was heard on one side of the mall. In a video shared to social media, customers and patrons begin fleeing stores to take cover. As the clip rolls on, the brave guard who confronted the thugs can be seen baring the wounds of battle – he is bleeding from the top of his right leg.

The man is assisted by his colleagues, who desperately search for medical help. Fair play to the guard, who took the bullet like an absolute champ. He defiantly stays on his feet and waits for the elevator to open.

Bullets fly across Johannesburg mall

ER24 were the first emergency crew on the scene. They have since issued a statement on the matter, shedding more light on what went down. The guard is now receiving immediate attention:

“A man, believed to be in his 30s, was left seriously injured this afternoon following a robbery at Cresta Mall in Randburg. ER24 paramedics, along with another service, arrived on the scene at 16:05 to find the local authorities already in attendance. Medics were led to the clinic were the patient had been taken to.”

“On assessment, medics found that the man had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper leg and was in a serious condition.The man was treated for his injuries and provided with pain-relief medication before he was transported to a private hospital for further care. Local authorities are on the scene for further investigations.”

Three shop staff were also assessed after they were apparently assaulted by the gunmen. The have-a-go hoodlums then made a break for it, speeding away through busy Johannesburg traffic. They didn’t get very far:

Johannesburg traffic seriously affected following shootout

Both have been apprehended by law enforcement officers, and they were discovered to be in possession of the firearm used in the brazen robbery. Despite their capture, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the cops. Their pursuit of the criminals has caused a bit of a traffic nightmare in the city – but nonetheless, it’s a small price to pay for justice being served:
