COVID-19: SA records 947 cases and 4 deaths – 6,9% positivity

South Africa added 947 new cases on Friday, 24 June. The country now has 13 204 active cases of COVID-19.

South Africa recorded 947 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, 24 June, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 13 778 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 6,9 percent.

SA ADDS 947 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 947 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Friday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 13 204. Four people died of COVID-19-related complications in the last 24 to 48 hours, according to the NICD.

The National Department of Health added 13 deaths, including the aforementioned four, bringing the death toll to 101 717.

There were 27 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the past 24 hours. The 262 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 1764 patients admitted.

“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 6.9%, and is higher than yesterday (5.9%). The 7-day average is 7.3% today, and is lower than yesterday (7.4%).” said the NICD.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN    

The majority of the cases identified on Friday were found in Gauteng (44%), followed by Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal with 18 percent each.

The Eastern Cape accounted for 6 percent, Mpumalanga had 5 percent and North West had 3 percent.

Limpopo and Free State both accounted for 2 percent each and Northern Cape rounded off the list with 1 percent of the day’s cases.

  • Eastern Cape – 60 cases;
  • Free State – 19 cases;
  • Gauteng –  417 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 174 cases;
  • Limpopo – 15 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 43 cases;
  • North West –32;
  • Northern Cape – 12 cases;
  • Western Cape – 175 cases.
