COVID-19 latest: SA reports 8 411 new reported cases, 182 deaths

The NICD said on Saturday 182 deaths were recorded, which brings the total of fatalities to 83 343 to date.

South Africa recorded 8 411 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has said on Saturday. 

This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 814 014. 

This increase of 8 411 new COVID-19 cases represents a 15.5 % positivity rate. 

A further 418 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 83 343 to date.

“The cumulative number of recoveries is 2 586 646.” 

KwaZulu-Natal is still in the lead with the majority of new cases: 2 525 (30%), followed by Western Cape with 1 726 new cases (21%), the Eastern Cape with 1 302 (15%), and then Gauteng with 539 new cases (6%) provinces.

Applications are open for the government’s reinstituted R350 social relief of distress grant but do you qualify for the grant? 

THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE COVID-19 GRANT:

A Social Relief of Distress Grant of R350 per month as indicated in the Directions is payable for the period indicated therein to a person who is:

  • a South African Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee registered on the Home Affairs database and persons who are holders of special permits under the Special Angolan Dispensation, the Lesotho Exemption Permit dispensation and the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation, and asylum seekers whose section 22 permits or visas are valid or were valid on 15 March 2020;
  • ​Currently residing within the borders of the Republic of South Africa;
  • ​above the age of 18 and below the age of 60;
  • ​unemployed;
  • ​not receiving any social grant in respect of himself or herself;
  • ​not receiving an unemployment insurance benefit and does not qualify to receive an unemployment insurance benefit;
  • ​not receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and other financial aid;
  • ​not receiving any other government COVID-19 response support; and
  • ​not a resident in a government funded or subsidised institution.

Caregivers who are not receiving any grant on their own behalf will also have to apply for the special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant.
