WRAP: COSATU strike in Cape Town

COSATU previously vowed to bring the local economy to a standstill with its mass strike on Thursday. The Federation will deliver a list of demands to the local, provincial and national government in the city.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and its affiliated union members intend to deliver memoranda of demands to the municipal, provincial and national governments on Thursday, 4 August. The Federation previously said the strike is a response to crime and the rising cost of living.

Wednesday, 3 August: COSATU said it will press ahead with its strike against crime and the rising cost of living in Cape Town on Thursday, 4 August. The Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, criticised the planned protest and referred to it as “misguided” and “counter-productive,” in a statement on Tuesday.

Tuesday, 2 August: Alan Winde, the Western Cape Premier, said the COSATU planned protest against violence in the Western Cape and the rising cost of living across South Africa is misguided, in a statement on Tuesday, 2 August.

Tuesday, 21 July: COSATU and its affiliates in the Western Cape are planning a major strike in the first week of August. According to union leaders, the march is against violence in the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape at large and the high fuel prices seen across South Africa.
