Correctional Services chief gives Free State inmates a second chance

Gustav Wilson is an ordinary South African using his job to make an extraordinary difference.

Criminal rehabilitation is a crucial part of going to jail and one that is often overlooked in a country where the jails are often too full. But in the Free State, one man is trying to make a small difference.

Gustav Wilson, Regional Head of Corrections at the Department of Correctional Services in the Free State/Northern Cape, partnered with the University of Free State Post Graduate Research Council to help a group of inmates complete their matric in 2015.

These kinds of in-prison programmes are crucial and a US study published in 2013 found that inmates who participate in correctional education programs have 43 percent lower odds of returning to prison.

A second chance, especially at a young age, can be invaluable. As Oliver Tambo once said: “A country that does not value its youth, does not deserve its future” and Wilson obviously gets it.

It’s no wonder that Moeketsi Mosola, political activist and businessman (and former CEO of SA Tourism), had nothing but praise for Mr. Wilson.

Writing on his Facebook Page, Mosola said:

“Dear Mr. Gustav Wilson, You are my hero from Bloemfontein. I have followed your posts and pictures which I find inspirational, uplifting and full of Hope.”

He added:

“The manner in which you have managed to use your profession as a Correctional Officer of the Law deserves recognition and respect.

“You are a true example of what a South African should look like. Your solid support from your wife and family is a good sign of a family United.

“I am glad our paths crossed. Next time I come home to Bloemfontein I would like to meet you, My Hero.”
