Constable fatally wounded when altercation turned violent

A police Constable was fatally wounded in Grassy Park in the Western Cape after an altercation with an armed suspect turned violent.

ALTERCATION LEADS TO THE SHOOTING OF A CONSTABLE

In a statement, the police confirmed that a 26-year-old constable was shot and killed earlier today, 1 December.

“Crime scene experts and detectives are gathering evidence on a crime scene in Grassy Park where a 26-year-old Constable was shot and killed this afternoon at around 17:45.”

EVENTS LEADING TO THE FATAL SHOOTING

According to the police, the deceased member and his partner reacted on information of an armed suspect in Blackbird Avenue in Grassy Park and during an altercation with the suspect, the member sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest, while his partner escaped the incident unharmed.
The suspect fled the crime scene and is yet to be arrested.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) investigators will lead the investigation into the circumstances of the matter, the statement suggested.

MANPOWER BEEFED UP IN HUNT FOR THE SUSPECT


The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape police, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile bolstered operational policing in the area by deploying additional resources to hunt down the suspect so that justice can be served.

In other news, a drug smuggler (29) was arrested on Sunday, 27 November 2022, for possession of cocaine after a flight from Qatar landed at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).
The arrest was conducted through an intelligence-driven operation where Carvalho was identified and her luggage searched.
About 1,5 kg of cocaine worth just over R500 000 was uncovered in a false compartment of her luggage.

The hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team has been entrusted with the docket.
Carvalho appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and her case was postponed to Thursday, 5 December pending verification of her credentials.
