City of Tshwane staff and Councillors not paid – here’s why

Staff of the City of Tshwane spent the Heritage Day weekend without having received their pay. But there is an explanation for this.

The staff of the City of Tshwane have not received their monthly salary this month. This is something which the ANC in Tshwane has blamed the multiparty coalitions for.

ANC SLAMS TSHWANE FOR FAILING TO PAY SALARIES

The opposition party in the capital city, ANC, has blamed the failure of salary payments on the DA-led multiparty coalition government.

According to ANC, the financial crisis in the city has seeped in, affecting its workers, said caucus spokesperson Joel Masilela ka Mahlangu.

“The municipality has… not paid its hardworking councillors, who are always on the ground trying to calm tensions in communities as an end result of the incompetence of the administration.”

He said workers are still owed payment for overtime work and the city has outstanding payments for the bargaining council agreements.

“The caucus leadership condemns the actions of this administration in being insensitive towards those who are at the coalface of service delivery – both councillors and the employees who work under extreme pressure with no moral support,” said Masilela ka Mahlangu.

OUTSTANDING SALARIES ARE DUE TO A BANK GLITCH AND NOT THE CITY’S FAULT

The outstanding payments were not at the hands of the City of Tshwane. They are in fact due to a system glitch at the bank.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said all payments were submitted to Absa Bank last Thursday.

But the bank experienced the glitch due to the public holiday on Saturday, Bokaba said.

“Absa acknowledged their system glitch. We are engaging with other banks to ensure that payment of salaries is affected by 16h00 today [Monday].

Currently, only staff banking with Absa have received their salaries paid so far.

But City of Tshwane staff has been informed in an internal communique and updates will continue to be issued.

“The banks have confirmed that they will incur costs resulting from this glitch. The non-payment of salaries has nothing to do with the city experiencing financial challenges due to poor revenue collection,” Bokaba said.
