Court interdicts EFF march in support of City of Tshwane ‘ex-employees’

The City of Tshwane has secured an urgent interdict against an illegal march organised by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). 

The march was set to take place on Monday, 28 March 2022. It was in support of capacity workers who have been long fighting to have their contracts renewed by the municipality after they expired.

City of Tshwane mayoral spokesperson, Sipho Stuurman said the EFF is not a labour organisation or a trade union. 

Stuurman said the EFF is a political party and yet it feels it can manipulate labour processes in the City in order to drive its own political agenda. 

“Today, the High Court ruled in the City of Tshwane’s favour and agreed with our view that political parties are not allowed to drive their own agendas by masquerading themselves as trade union representatives on behalf of ex-employees.

“The City works through properly constituted forums and processes when engaging on labour matters in order to ensure that due processes and legislation are correctly followed, processes which the EFF assumes it can ignore.”

The High Court reportedly ruled that:

• The EFF’s march is considered illegal
• The EFF is to immediately disperse and is interdicted from engaging in the unlawful march
• The party and its members are interdicted from performing any acts of destruction of City of Tshwane property 
• The EFF is also ordered to pay the costs of the application.
