City of Cape Town faces a sh*tstorm over tonnes of poo being dumped into the ocean

At first they tried to deny that they were doing it, but pretending that 55 million litres of sewage just didn’t happen is a tough gig.

According to ZigZag magazine, photographer Jean Trefson noticed a plume of what looked to be sewage appear in the sea just off Mouille Point. Trefson was on marine patrol when he saw it.

The City’s CapeTalk response didn’t really do much to convince listeners, as they claim that “officials had a look at the picture and their assumption is that one cannot confirm what exactly the plume or the source thereof is. It could be many things and the City’s experts will have to do a comprehensive analysis.”

To add to the entertainment, the city said that “no seagulls are noticeable in the photo and their presence would have been an indication of sewage discharge. In addition, one would be able to see the seagulls gathering around the sewage plume from the shoreline.”

Unfortunately, upon closer inspection – the initial photo was taken from quite high up – you can clearly see seagulls hovering over the sh*t.

But wait, there’s more. The City of Cape Town – who quickly realised that they’ve been in contravention of environmental law and don’t have the necessary permits to dump the crap in the ocean – has in the mean time applied for a special permit to dump the poop in the sea off Hout Bay, Green Point, Mouille Point and Camps Bay… about 55 million litres a day.

According to the city, this is the most cost effective way of getting rid of the poop.If you’ve got something to say you’re welcome to have your voice heard by contacting the city here:
