Those receiving their electricity from the City of Cape Town woke up in the dark – literally – on Thursday after a sudden change to the previously confirmed load shedding schedule.

After initially extending Stage 3 load shedding until Thursday, Eskom announced that it will be extended yet again – and this time indefinitely.

South Africans woke on Thursday to a 05:25 tweet by Eskom confirming that due to the failure of two units at Kendal Power Station and a unit each at Kriel and Arnot power stations, Stage 3 load shedding would been extended from 05:00 until further notice.
Eskom added that it would provide more details later in the day.
Previously, Stage 3 load shedding was due to be suspended at 05:00, only to kick in again at 16:00 until 05:00 on Friday morning.

South Africans are entering their 143rd day of load shedding in 2022, making it the worst year on record.

Meanwhile, in reaction to Eskom’s plan, the City of Cape Town also amended its schedule – but not early enough to avoid drawing the anger of customers who were caught unaware.
Those who receive their electricity from the City of Cape Town are currently on Stage 1 until 16:00, after which (until 22:00) Stage 2 will be in place.
From 22:00 until 06:00 on Friday there will be Stage 3 load shedding.
The same times and stages will be in place on Friday.
