Footage of a JMPD officer being attacked and disarmed by a group of angry church congregants in Hilbrow on Sunday has emerged on social media. It’s reported that his sin was towing a car belonging to a church member, which was parked illegally, causing traffic congestion.

In the video, the officer is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the angry mob as he tries to back away into safety. He pulls out his firearm and fires a warning shot, but that does little to deter the approaching crowd, as one person can be heard yelling, “We’ll take away the gun”.

Take away the gun, they did as he was swiftly relieved of his firearm without appearing to resist much and beaten thereafter.

His on-duty partner appears in the video but the crowd does not seem to bothered with him as he keeps a relatively safe distance from the altercation.

According to News24, the congregants did not keep the gun after the incident – one person was arrested as some members of the church went to hand in the firearm at Johannesburg Central Station.
