ICYMI: Two children drown in swimming pool at Durban hotel

Two children aged five and nine have drowned in a swimming pool at one of the hotels in South Beach in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. 

The incident happened on Tuesday, 29 November 2022.

According to emergency service, Emer-G-Med, they responded to the scene at approximately 15:00 and on arrival on scene a five and nine-year-old female were found in a state of cardiac arrest.

Spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said resuscitation efforts and several advanced life support intervention methods were exhausted for over an hour, however were unsuccessful and the two children were sadly declared dead on the scene.

In a separate incident, two children from Bombolo Primary School in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal lost their lives after they also drowned while swimming in Msunduze River. The incident reportedly happened in Ward 2 on Tuesday, 15 November. 

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), a report they received indicated that the two children aged 11 and 12 were swimming in the Msunduze river after school. On the same day in Ward 6, a 21-year-old male drowned while trying to cross the eMona river. 

The department also reiterated its call for communities to be cautious around large bodies of water and to appeal to parents and teachers to warn children about the dangers of swimming in rivers and undesignated areas. 

“The Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to work closely with all disaster management teams to ensure that adequate measures are taken to warn communities about the dangers of large bodies of water, especially with the spring in full swing.”
