Children discover body ‘burnt beyond recognition’ while riding their bicycles

‘The race or sex of the person is unknown as the person was burned beyond recognition,’ said police. The children stumbled upon the body in a bushy area.

The police in the Eastern Cape need the public’s help to identify the remains of an unknown person. This comes after a group of children made a grisly discovery in Booysens Park on Freedom Day, 27 April.

POLICE SEEK NEXT OF KIN OF BURNT VICTIM

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the children were allegedly riding their bicycles through a bushy area near Greenfields, Booysens Park at approximately 18:15 when they stumbled upon the burnt remains.

“Police suspect that the body may have been transported in a wheelie bin and burned. The race or sex of the person is unknown as the person was burned beyond recognition,” said Naidu.

A murder case has been opened by detectives at the Bethelsdorp police station.

Members of the public with information that can help officers track down the burnt person’s family are encouraged to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Alicia Goldman at 082-442-1633 or Crime Stop at 08600-10111.

People are encouraged to report any persons that they know have gone missing recently.
