In another horrific incident of violence against children, two youngsters aged six and eight have been found murdered at Orange Farm, about 45km from Johannesburg.

The pair, who were family friends but not related, were found dead about 100m apart at around 5am on Saturday morning.

Mother reported missing kids at 2.30am

They had been reported missing to local police at around 2.30am by the mother of the six-year-old boy. He and the eight-year-old, a girl, had been together at the time they went missing.

“Police launched an immediate search for the two children who, according to the complainant, were last seen on Friday evening at around 7pm when they were allegedly walking home from a hair salon,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.

Both were certified dead at the scene

At around 5am officers received a report of a child’s body lying in the street and, shortly thereafter, a passer-by discovered the second body close by.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, but both children were certified dead.

A motive for the killings has yet to be determined, while a post mortem will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

Police say it’s a priority investigation

“The investigation into this double murder will be prioritised and escalated to the Provincial Investigating Unit, in line with the SAPS position to prioritise the investigation of crimes committed against women, children and other vulnerable persons,” Peters said.

A statement issued by SAPS has again called on parents to prioritise the safety of their children at all times and to always be aware of their whereabouts.

“Children walking in the streets at night must be prohibited; otherwise they must be accompanied,” SAPS said.
