Watch: EFF protest at the Smokehouse and Grill over Catzavelos association [video]

It’s all because of the Greek holiday maker that threw a stick in the spokes of social cohesion.

A group of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) descended on the Smokehouse and Grill restaurant on Thursday.

The red beret donning revolutionaries proceeded to disrupt operations at the Braamfontein establishment by singing and dancing on tables. The video shows patrons exiting the restaurant, as members chant Asinalo uvalo, which according to The Citizen, means ‘they no longer had fear in what they do’.

But why did the EFF, which is infamous for focusing its socio-political protestation on retailers accused of racism, target the Smokehouse and Grill?

It’s all because of the Greek holiday maker that threw a stick in the spokes of social cohesion. Yes, it can be none other than Adam Catzavelos – the South African who thought it necessary to remark that the beach he was holidaying on was unbeatable because there were no “k***irs” around.

Since then, furore has descended on Catzavelos and his family – with the racist receiving similar treatment to Penny Sparrow and Vicki Momberg. The difference is that nobody knows whether Catzavelos can face criminal charges – unlike South Africa’s first ladies of bigotry, who were both successfully prosecuted.

So, in this case, with Catzavelos likely to escape the criminal justice system – the public has been particularly unforgiving in dishing out their own brand of justice.

The family, which has been targeted of retribution, issued a statement regarding Adam and its business concerns. The Catzavelos’ own St George’s Fine foods – of which Adam is no longer a part of, following public pressure.

But Adam also had a 25% passive interest in the Smokehouse and Grill; his status as a shareholder has, since the incident, been revoked.

Still, the EFF cares little for technicalities, and more for brute shows of force. Besides momentarily shutting down operations at the restaurant, the political party has also opened a criminal case against Catzavelos at the Bramley police station.
