Two more suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 24 August, in connection with a deadly cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred in Johannesburg earlier this month.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said the CIT heist occurred on Friday, 12 August, along Nasrec Road.

The cash van suddenly came under fire and the driver managed to keep going until the vehicle came to a standstill.

“Suspects allegedly robbed the security guards of their cellphones and one firearm before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

“The Johannesburg Flying Squad swiftly responded to the scene, the fleeing suspects were spotted in three vehicles, BMW, Nissan Navarra and Toyota Fortuner,” said Ramovha.

The suspects allegedly opened fire on police and a gun battle broke out. Four suspects were killed. They were identified as Vusumuzi Mosses Botile, 40, Sibongiseni Remember Hlengwa, 41, Mandlenkosi Freeman Zikhali, 42, and Hector Sihle Buthelezi, 46.

Another suspect, Luyanda Mzizi, 30, was arrested at the scene and Bongani Jele, 45, was caught a few days later. The duo appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Tuesday, 23 August and the matter was postponed to 31 August for a bail application.

Wednesday’s arrests mean there are four suspects in custody for the CIT heist. The additional suspects are expected to make their first court appearance on Thursday, 25 August. The pair were found with unlicensed firearms.

“The group is to face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms and attempted murder,” said the Hawks spokesperson.
