CAPITEC’S FEE RETURNS TO HIGHER RATE

The statement was made on social media and after the charge had been a lower R7.50, as stated on the bank’s website.

“Update: From 1 October, the cash withdrawal fee for using another bank’s ATM will change back to R9.75 per R1000 as branches, ATMs & retailers reopen following the recent unrest,” the announcement said.

The fee charge for withdrawing cash at retail supermarkets will remain unchanged. The bank confirmed that the fee for withdrawing cash at Checkers, Shoprite, Pnp, and Boxer will still be R1.60.

“Capitec clients can also withdraw cash at your nearest Checkers, Shoprite or PnP for only R1.60.”

THE UPDATE FOLLOWS AFTER APP CRISIS

Capitec’s latest decision has come after customers around South Africa experienced frustration while trying to access the bank’s mobile app on Tuesday 28 September. A handful of users went over to social media to report that they weren’t able to use their Capitec mobile banking app since Tuesday morning.

Around 62% of users reported problems with the mobile app, while 37% complained that they were experiencing problems with internet banking.

The company responded with a statement that promised to resolve the issue.

“Hi there, we apologise for the inconvenience. We had some temporary App downtime. Our IT team is working hard to keep these issues to a minimum. Please restart your phone and try again,” Capitec said on Tuesday.

Capitec also reached out to users with text messages that acknowledged the problem:

“We’re experiencing connectivity problems on our app, ATMs, card & 1203279# are working. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
