With the Western Cape braced for yet another cold front to make landfall and bring with it gale-force winds and heavy rain that threaten localised flooding, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) have also indicated that some of the province might experience some light snow fall on Thursday 8 July.

SAWS have raised a Yellow Level 2 weather warning for the Western Cape saying that the cold front already causing challenges to emergency services will continue into the night.

Cape Town braced for adverse weather

In a statement released on Thursday morning, SAWS said that heavy rain and wind will make travelling difficult for Cape Town and Western Cape residents. They said that wind along the coast will be strong northwesterly reaching gale-force between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas.

Curiously, they also warned of “extremely high fire danger conditions” expected over the Eastern Cape, the eastern parts of the Western Cape, the central and eastern Northern Cape as well as the south western Free State.

“Yellow level 2 warning for WIND resulting in localized problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes is expected over the Northern Cape and interior of the Western Cape from the morning, spreading to the south coast of the Western Cape by the afternoon,” they said.

“Yellow level 2 for WIND resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas from the morning, spreading to Plettenberg Bay in the afternoon.”

“Yellow level 2 warning for RAIN leading to localised flooding can be expected in the city of Cape Town, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch and. Theewaterskloof municipalities of the Western Cape.”

Snow forecast in mountainous areas

SAWS said that the Western Cape can expect cloudy and cold conditions over the west and southwestern parts, but fine and cool over the east and southeastern parts.

“It will be windy with showers over the west and southwestern parts from late afternoon, spreading northwards and eastwards during the evening,” they said.

They also said that “light snowfalls” can be be expected over the southwestern mountain peaks from late evening on Thursday.
