The City of Cape Town said the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of very warm temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds in the area on Wednesday, 8 February.

CAPE TOWN WARNS PUBLIC OF FIRE RISK

The City said the weather conditions could result in the development of runaway vegetation fires. The local Fire and Rescue Service is on high alert for any fire incidents that occur.

The public is encouraged to report any signs of fire as soon as possible via the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.

“A reminder, please not to toss cigarette butts from vehicles or on the ground, particularly near any vegetation; keep access to fire hydrants open for use by the emergency services, and only make fires in safe, designated areas and extinguish the fire when done,” said the City,

As previously reported, a cut-off low-pressure weather system is expected to bring rain to most of South Africa this week. However, the Western Cape and western parts of the Northern Cape will be unaffected.
