Cape Town taxi strike: Golden Arrow buses torched as commuters struggle [video]

The Cape Town taxi strike is leaving thousands stranded currently and looks like it could leave people stranded in the future too. Why? At least two Golden Arrow buses have been set alight as tensions boiled over in the early hours of the morning.

Cape Town taxi strike: Buses targetted too

The strike started on Monday morning after some associations decided to halt services after issues with internal leadership elections.

It has been confirmed that the strike was brought about by the lack of the South African National Taxi Association’s (SANTACO) urgency in convening a conference that is meant to address leadership issues in the region.

Taxi associations in the Western Cape share a common sentiment with regards to the leadership structure of SANTACO: their views are not being heard at a national level.

Golden Arrow has confirmed that two of its busses have been torched. The first, in Makhaza, while the second was in Lingelethu West.

Taxis have been unable to transport commuters from Mitchells plain, Wynberg as well as Khayelitsha. As a result of busses being targeted in the area, no busses were being used in Khayelitsha.

Tyres were also set alight on the N2 incoming before Mew Way, Khayelitsha.
