The City of Cape Town (CoCT) has urged the public to comment on proposals to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety on Voortrekker Road.

Why is the City proposing upgrades to Voortrekker Road?

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility Councillor Rob Quintas said they intend to upgrade a section of Voortrekker Road in Maitland and Kensington. Quintas said that the upgrades form part of the City’s Congestion Relief Programme.

Voortrekker Road is an important road between the eastern and western suburbs. It connects people from Kuils River and Bellville with Parow, Goodwood, Epping and Observatory.

Quintas said the 1964 road scheme was reviewed and that he is now encouraging the public to comment on the proposed upgrades that form part of their new concept design.

Quintas added that if all goes to plan, the City intends to start the construction work by 2025.

Residents are urged to comment on the first phase

The project is quite a large one and therefore the upgrade will be implemented in phases. The City says that public commenting on the upgrade of Voortrekker Road is an important aspect.

The public is being requested to comment on the proposals for Phase One. This entails:

  • The realignment of Camp Road to Beach Road and the signalisation of this intersection with Voortrekker Road;
  • The widening of Koeberg Road between Voortrekker Road and Royal Road;
  • The dualling of Voortrekker Road between Station Road in Maitland and 12th Avenue in Kensington, together with improvements at intersections to assist with traffic flow, and the provision of walking and cycling lanes;
  • Pedestrian bridges over the railway line in the vicinity of 4th Avenue and;
  • Upgrading of the intersections at 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue in Kensington.
