The City of Cape Town’s R500 million Delft Symphony Way housing project was petrol bombed on Thursday night, 9 February 2023, the same night as the State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2023.

MACHINES BOMBED AT CAPE TOWN DELFT HOUSING PROJECT

MMC for Human Settlements Councillor Malusi Booi said the attack happened around 23:30 on Thursday night.

“Two construction machines and some construction materials were petrol bombed. Fortunately, no human life was lost but work will only continue if the safety of City staff and contractors is not in jeopardy.”

This is the second attack at the project site. In the first incident a week ago, gun-happy thugs shot at contractors; the city has now increased its security around the area.

Booi says the attacks have been reported to the South African Police Service, and law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation.

“The city would like to make it clear that it will not tolerate the criminal attacks, community interference or acts of extortion against its projects. Members of the community are encouraged to stand with the City for the benefit of 3 300 beneficiaries.”

He said the beneficiaries come from some of the most vulnerable areas, including Blikkiesdorp, Malawi Camp, and Freedom Farm.

The city offers an award of R5 000 for information leading to the arrest of these criminals.

“We call on the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority to step up efforts to safeguard public projects.”

Booi says they want to complete this project within the agreed-to timelines to benefit some of our most vulnerable beneficiaries.

He added that the recent incident had not impacted the project timelines, but community members must help them complete this project.
