Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has immediately fired MMC Malusi Booi from the Mayoral Committee (Mayco).

MMC BOOI INVESTIGATED FOR FRAUD AND CORRUPTION

This follows his initial suspension on 16 March 2023. This removal from Mayco follows an updated briefing from the South African Police Services (SAPS) regarding progress on their investigation into alleged fraud and corruption.

“I have received an updated briefing from the SAPS regarding their investigation, and on this basis, have decided to remove Councillor Malusi Booi from his position on the Mayoral Committee with immediate effect,” said Hille-Lewis.

“While Councillor Booi has not been charged, the matters under investigation are, to my mind, serious enough to warrant immediate action to protect the integrity of our government,” Hill-Lewis said.

He said he had given the Police the City’s full support in the ongoing investigation.

“I further assured the SAPS of the City’s full support in the ongoing investigation. The City has a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and corruption, and I will not hesitate to act in the interests of good governance,” Hill-Lewis said.

The mayor said Alderman James Vos continues as Acting Mayco Member for Human Settlements.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis placed MMC Booi on suspension before he fired him today. This follows a police search and seizure operation, which took place on 15 March 2023 at the City’s offices, including that of Councillor Booi.

The Police seized Booi’s cellphone and devices from members of his office during the raid.
