A 37-year-old man headed to the Manenberg South African Police Service (SAPS) station and reported that he was robbed by three gun-wielding suspects in Surrey Estate, Cape Town, on Monday, 17, May.

The investigating officers followed the breadcrumbs in a circle and arrested the man who reported the case for perjury on Wednesday.

CAPE TOWN MAN ARRESTED FOR PERJURY

According to Cape Town SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut, the arrestee claimed three armed suspects in a VW Polo robbed him of R10 000, in cash, while he was riding his motorcycle in Comet Road, Surrey Estate.

“The thorough investigation by detectives of Manenberg into the circumstances of an armed robbery led to the arrest of a suspect, however, the suspect was the one who falsely reported the case to SAPS,” said Traut.

The police followed up on all the leads, which is why they ended up suspecting that the complainant was the offender. Traut said when the man was confronted with the evidence he folded and admitted that there was no robbery and that he fabricated the case – although the reason why remains unclear.

The man was arrested on Wednesday and he is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where he will face charges of perjury.

Major General Thembesile Patekile, the acting provincial commissioner of the Western Cape, was pleased with the outcome of the investigation and said people should take heed and think twice before lying under oath and reporting fallacious cases to the police.
