Cape Town International Airport voted ‘Africa’s leading airport’ for second year in a row

Cape Town International Airport has been voted as the global travellers’ airport of choice in Africa, an accolade that the city’s airport has received for the second year in a row.

On Saturday, at the Durban International Convention Centre, Cape Town International Airport came out victorious as the global travellers’ airport of choice in Africa, at the 25th World Travel Awards & Indian Ocean gala dinner.

The airport came up second, behind Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo International Airport, in the category of the busiest airports in Africa.

Cape Town International Airport does it again

The airport is run by Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), who have reported an impressive growth in passengers. As of 2017, the airport has recorded a year-on-year sustained growth trajectory of 5.3%.

Moreover, Business Day reported that

Growth in international passengers has been in double digits for the past few years. The airport exceeded the 10-million passenger-a-year milestone for the first time in December 2016.

Plans are under way to have the airport renamed and public hearings have already been conducted in this regard. Among the leading names put forward is that of struggle heroine Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, which was proposed by the EFF.

More accolades in the pipeline for South Africa’s leading airports

The spokesperson of the Cape Town International Airport, Deidre Davids reacted to the news of the victory received by the airport for the second year in a row.

“Cape Town International Airport is honoured to once again receive this very important accolade. Being named Africa’s leading airport for the second year is extremely gratifying and reinforces the hard work and commitment to excellence demonstrated at this airport in the past 12 months‚”, Davids added.

The airport, as well as O.R Tambo International Airport, has also been nominated for the World’s Leading Airport 2018 award. What a proud moment to be a Capetonian.
