Cape Town cops arrest 484 suspected bad guys in just one week in Mitchell’s Plain

That’s got to be a record. Almost 500 people arrested in just a week and almost half for drug=related crimes.

A week-long crime-busting spree by the Mitchell’s Plain police cluster, which included raids on 859 spaza shops, 87 houses and four separate roadblocks, delivered some pretty neat results.

Now, while it’s hardly the first time the police have tried cleaning up the area, it’s been a while since we’ve seen this kind of time and energy invested in an area that has been struggling with drugs and gang-related crime for decades.

So, let’s have a quick look at some of the key figures from last week’s raid:

  • 223 people arrested for possession of drugs.
  • 64 wanted suspects arrested.
  • 21 arrests for crimes against women and children.
  • Others were arrested for housebreaking and theft, assault, possession of stolen property and traffic violations.
  • 222.17g of heroin confiscated.
  • 757.82 units of tik.
  • 17 558 mandrax tablets.
  • 856.59g of dagga confiscated.
  • Ten shebeen operations delivered 1359.66 litres of liquor confiscated and two stolen vehicles found as well as eight illegal firearms.

A bust this big sets quite the precedent and should serve as a stark reminder that the cops aren’t going to be taking any kak from anyone anymore.

According to IOL, Mitchell’s Plain cluster commander Maj-Gen Gregory Goss said police would continue clamping down on crime and criminal activities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
