It is beyond the realms of nightmares, for both the victim and the parents: A young boy, in his local park, enjoys a kickabout with his mates, gets approached by a stranger, and is brutally attacked.

This is the reality a Cape Town family have had to face this week…

Miraculously, 12-year-old Ronan managed to survive the deranged attack on Tuesday afternoon despite his multiple stab wounds.

According to his mother Genevieve, her son and his friends played soccer in the Goodwood park almost every day around lunchtime, but on this occasion, they spotted a strange man watching them. He then approached the group and asked Ronan for his name.

The man then became extremely violent, tripping the boy and using an unidentified sharp object to stab him whilst on the ground. One of Ronan’s friends had the quick wits to run and call his older sibling, Deon.

The 19-year-old got to his little brother almost immediately and was able to apply pressure to some of his multiple wounds. He was rushed to N1 City Hospital with his injuries and operated on late Tuesday evening.

Ronan was able to defend himself during the barbaric frenzy but suffered major injuries to his arms and hands. His mother has revealed it is ‘uncertain’ if her son will be able to regain full use of them as he recovers.

Captain Wayne Theunnis of Goodwood Police has confirmed a 31-year-old man was arrested and will appear in Magistrate’s Court later on Thursday.
