Affected Cape Town Areas and Duration of Water Supply Disruptions

The maintenance work includes pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements. The affected areas include Bellville CBD, Triangle Farm, Bellville South, Labiance, Greenlands, Glenhaven, Stikland, Kenridge, De Bron, Welgemoed areas and Hillcrest, Somerset West.

In Bellville, Bellville CBD, Triangle Farm, Bellville South, Labiance, Greenlands, Glenhaven and Stikland:

“The faulty control valves on the main water supply to these areas need to be replaced urgently and will require that the water supply be shut off from Tuesday, 13 June 2023 at 19:00 until Wednesday, 14 June 2023 at 04:30.”

In Kenridge, De Bron and Welgemoed:

“The main water supply pipeline to these areas needs to be shut off from 21:00 on Tuesday, 13 June 2023, overnight until 04:00 on Wednesday, 14 June 2023, to enable the maintenance team to safely install a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) on the pipeline. This will result in the disruption of the water supply to these areas.”

In Hillcrest, Somerset West:

“The main water supply pipeline to these areas needs to be shut off from 10:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 13 June 2023, to enable the maintenance team to safely install a water meter on the pipeline.”

Water tests

Zero-pressure tests, step tests and conditional assessments will be conducted in Mowbray, Salt River and Woodstock. Some residents in the affected areas may experience low water pressure, while others could have no water during the overnight testing period from 21:00 on Tuesday until 4:00 on Wednesday.

The City said it is not possible to predict which areas or streets would experience the water supply disruptions.

What residents need to know about the planned supply disruptions

  • The City said considerable thought had been given to scheduling the maintenance to minimise inconvenience.
  • All areas where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades occur are designated as construction sites and inaccessible to the general public.
  • Sometimes, the maintenance work may be more intricate than initially expected, resulting in a longer duration for completion.
  • Following the return of the water supply, there may be a temporary discolouration or a milky appearance in the water. This is due to trapped air in the pipes. If the water is left to settle in a glass, it will eventually become clear, resembling normal water.
