Cape FLOODS: Emergency services deployed to THESE areas

Torrential rain leads to widespread Cape floods. Western Cape emergency services have been deployed to the following areas.

With more than 125 mm of rain leading to widespread Cape floods, Western Cape disaster management emergency services have been deployed to the following areas.

Media outlets are reporting that torrential rain and Cape floods have left a trail of destruction overnight. Including burst riverbanks, damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure. City of Cape Town’s head of disaster management, Charlotte Powell, noted the following services were deployed to assist with:

  • Four people were rescued from a house in Strand.
  • Houses in the Cape Town CBD and Hout Bay had roofs blown off due to heavy winds.
  • Durbanville, Bo-Kaap, Schaapkraal, Bellville South, Belhar, Sandvlei Macassar, Strand, Gordon’s Bay, and Knorhoek reported flooded houses.

  • Informal settlements of Shukushukma; Sir Lowry’s Pass Village; Rasta Camp; Riemvasmaak; 7de Laan in Sandvlei, Macassar; Old Faure Road in Driftsands; Mfuleni; and Bellville South are under water due to the Cape floods.
  • Trees were uprooted in Hout Bay, Macassar, Rondebosch East, Durbanville, Kuilsriver, Woodstock, Klipheuwel IFS, and Malmesbury farms due to heavy winds and rising water table from the Cape floods.

OVERBERG HIT HARDEST

Several homes were underwater in the Overberg due to the Cape floods. Thankfully, local municipalities have been able to arrange alternative accommodation at community halls until the rain subsides.

Two cars were reportedly swept away on the R316 Bredasdorp/Napier road in the Overberg as the road flooded. Overstrand municipal manager Dean O’Neill said the operational, environmental, and protection services departments packed more than 1 500 sandbags and bricks in the area to divert the water.

O’Neill reported that hundreds of calls from worried residents were registered. “The Overstrand municipality has a three-to-five call backlog per area. Residents are requested to be patient as all calls will be followed up,” O’Neill said.

ELECTRICITY OUTAGES

Janine Willemans from the City of Cape said there had been several reports of electricity outages due to the Cape floods. The city is working to restore power to Mitchells Plain.

There are also outages in Philippi, Gugulethu, Eastridge, Steenberg, Wetton, Bellville, Plattekloof, Green Point and Pinati Estate.

The City of Cape Town has suspended load-shedding for the day, however, it warns that storm-related damage takes a long time. This is due to flooded infrastructure and safety considerations for the technicians.
