Elon Musk’s wealth rockets: This is his net worth vs SA’s dollar billionaires

Only Jeff Bezos has made more money than Elon Musk in the past year – and the billionaire’s net worth has now soared to new heights.

The sky truly is the limit for Elon Musk: The Pretoria-born billionaire has made a fortune in the technology sector, and his private ventures into outer space have captured imaginations worldwide. Although he’s not above ruffling a few feathers on Twitter, the past 12 months have seen his net worth jump significantly.

What is Elon Musk’s net worth?

This time last year, Elon Musk was worth around $27 billion. A handsome sum for anyone, let’s be honest. But his wealth has increased by two-and-a-half times that amount in 2020. According to Bloomberg, the entrepreneur now has a net worth of $68.7 billion – and that stands as a very significant number:

  • His SpaceX and Tesla projects have propelled his wealth into the stratosphere, accounting for his $41 billion spike.
  • Elon Musk’s current net worth puts him in the world’s top 10 richest citizens for the first time.
  • Only Jeff Bezos – the world’s richest person – has seen a bigger yearly rise in wealth ($72 billion).

Who are the richest people in the world?

Last week, Mark Zuckerberg became only the third person to breach the $100 billion mark, joining Bezos and Bill Gates in the ‘centi-billionaire’ club. Given Elon Musk’s meteoric wealth growth in the last 12 months, the landmark is not beyond the reach of this US-based brainbox in the near future.

As we saw last month, Jeff Bezos’ net worth is on course to overtake South Africa’s GDP in the next few years, with the Amazon tycoon likely to become the world’s first trillionaire. Elon Musk isn’t quite on the same trajectory, but his immense personal value dwarfs that of South Africa’s billionaire club…

Elon Musk’s wealth vs the dollar-billionaires of South Africa

Musk is worth three-and-a-half times more than all of Mzansi’s dollar-billionaires put together. SA’s richest citizen, Nicky Oppenheimer, barely lays a glove on the tech whizz: His fortune is 10% of what Musk is worth:

  • Nicky Oppenheimer: $6.8 billion / R112.2 billion
  • Johann Rupert: $6.2 billion / R102.3 billion
  • Patrice Motsepe: $2.6 billion / R42.9 billion
  • Koos Bekker: $2.5 billion / R41.3 billion
  • Michiel le Roux: $1.3 billion / R21.45 billion
  • Total wealth of SA’s five richest residents: $19.4 billion / R320 billion
  • Total wealth of Elon Must: $68.7 billion / R1.22 trillion
