South Africa knows a thing or two about going through tough times. But the coronavirus pandemic could well be the darkest period in our post-democratic history. Unemployment has soared, GDP was decimated in the previous quarter, and thousands of lives have been lost, For Cyril Ramaphosa, the situation is an almost impossible one to manage.

But, despite the financial hardships that are coming down on South Africans like a ton of bricks, there are some people that simply won’t feel the impact of COVID-19 on the same scale as the rest of us. President Ramaphosa’s million-rand salary remains safe – as do the mega-earnings of this country’s top CEOs.

Annual salaries of South Africa’s top CEOs

A list published by MyBroadband this week has used data from the JSE to evaluate what the top, top earners at in South Africa’s most lucrative positions are taking home with them. The criteria used for this comparison uses companies that have an average wage of R500k per year or more, making them the highest of all rollers in SA.

  1. Rob Shuter, MTN: R58.23 million.
  2. Shameel Joosub, Vodacom: R43.4 million.
  3. Sipho Maseko, Telkom: R21.82 million.
  4. Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice: R27.53 million.
  5. Andre de Ruyter, Eskom: R8.62 million.
  6. Sbu Shabalala, Adapt IT: R4.84 million.
  7. Madoda Mwakwe, SABC: R3.92 million.
  8. Mlamli Booi, Sentech: R3.44 million.
  9. Daniel du Toit, Denel: R3.22 million.
  10. Andrew Matseke, Broadband Infraco: R2.7 million

How much is Cyril Ramaphosa worth?

Now, compare that to what Cyril Ramaphosa makes in a year: His salary stands at R2.99 million per annum. Of the ten CEOs listed, the president only makes more than one of them – Broadband Infraco’s Andrew Matseke.

Although Ramaphosa is the best-paid Parliamentarian, his wages pale in comparison to other CEOs. He makes less than the respective head honchos of state companies Denel, Eskom and SABC. In fact, Cyril’s annual turnover is almost 20 times less than what MTN CEO Rob Shuter brings home.

President Ramaphosa has amassed his own personal fortune (worth $450m, according to Forbes), making his salary from Parliament almost redundant. Although he does enjoy benefits such as free flights and a sweet pension payout, it doesn’t make up much of his already-existing private wealth – so don’t expect to see Cyril hand in his CV to MTN any time soon.
