Each event will comprise of a full day of talks, presentations and creative performances. The inaugural session will feature national celebrities Zolani from Freshlyground, radio and television show host Danilo Acquisto and the co-founder of Bridges For Music, Thulani ‘DJ Fosta’ Headman, in addition to local talent from the community.

What is the aim of The Raw Sessions?

The aim of The Raw Sessions is to provide a platform for the local creative entrepreneurs and artisans of Khayelitsha, one of the largest townships in South Africa. The township has one of the fastest-growing artisan communities in the country.

Siyabonga Wilson Mbaba, founder of Ghetto Sessions and Project Manager at Heavy Chef has hosted over forty Ghetto Sessions events since its inception in 2017.

Mbaba says, “Our aim for this incredible platform is that creative entrepreneurs will be able to collaborate, network and promote their wares to a diverse audience.”

“For far too long,” says Mbaba, “Khayelitsha has fallen prey to negative press coverage related to poverty and crime, with the result being a deep sense of fear and estrangement in the hearts of many Capetonians. We want to shine positive sentiment on Khayelitsha, and bridge the gap between the variety of cultures in Cape Town.”

While Fred Roed, CEO of Heavy Chef, says, “I am exceptionally excited about the ‘Raw’ series of experiences. These events are unique in that they merge the learning component of Heavy Chef with the entertainment aspect of Ghetto Sessions. Siya is a latent entrepreneur talent in his own right, and we all have high expectations of his remarkable community-building abilities.”
