School suicide: Bullies push girl to kill herself in the Eastern Cape

A Grade 10 learner committed suicide because of merciless bullies from school. Her peers in Bhisho claimed she was doing witchcraft.

A young 16-year-old life has been lost through suicide, thanks to school bullies in Bhisho, Eastern Cape. Lathitha Nako was ‘spiritually gifted,’ but her peers took this for witchcraft.

SCHOOL GIRL SUICIDE IN BHISHO EASTERN CAPE

The disturbing event was initially reported on Facebook before going viral across the land. According to the report, the Bhisho high school grade 10 learner found an escape from bullies by swallowing a pesticide and died in hospital on Wednesday.

A WhatsApp voice note that is believed to have been recorded by the victim made the rounds on social media. Nako is heard talking to her friend about the horror of the witchcraft accusation she was facing at school.

She thus suggested taking her own life would be a solution.

“I’ve been going through so much pain my friend. I can’t believe Avumile and them did this,” Nako is heard saying to her friend in the voice note.

“It is hard to be around people since this thing happened. I can’t even enjoy good moments now. I just suddenly remember this thing

“I can’t believe she accused me of witchcraft. She knows I have a gift. I explained it to her. I said I have a gift that makes me do things I do not want to do.

Nako also suggested that one of her teachers believed the wild accusation of her practicing witchcraft on others.

“People will believe them. There are three of them against me,” she added.

“I am tired of fighting now. I am leaving it all to God.”

NAKO’S MOTHER SHARES HER PAIN

The victim’s mother Kholeka Nako said her daughter was a wholly different person to individual her school peers and the world knew.

“I am completely torn apart by what happened to my child,” the teary mother said to SABC News.

“She had dreams of becoming a Doctor. It breaks my heart that I will never see Lathitha again. I will only see her in pictures now.”
