Budding Eastern Cape swimmer bags medals in Portugal

R24 000 donation by a municipality to support budding Eastern Cape swimmer Esona Sekeleni did not go to waste

Budding Eastern Cape swimmer Esona Sekeleni has shut down critics after her sponsored trip to Portugal did not go to ‘waste’.

BUDDING EASTERN CAPE SWIMMER EXCELS IN PORTUGAL

Esona represented South Africa and her home province of Eastern Cape and bagged several medals at the  Biathle Championships in Portugal.

According to the Daily Dispatch, the proud East London mom and her daughter have returned with a medal from the competition. She came second with her team in the overall competition, which led to her and two other SA contestants taking home silver medals.

WHEN WERE THE BIATHLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The World Cup in Portugal took place from 26 October to 31 October 2022.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality offloaded the budding Eastern Cape swimmer’s burden and took care of the expenses for the trip.

The Buffalo City Metro held a send-off for the 10-year-old swimmer recently.

THE TOUGH ROAD TO ESONA’S FUNDRAISER

The send-off took place at the East London City Hall New Council Chambers on Wednesday, 19 October.

Speaking during the send-off Acting Executive Mayor Princess Faku said, “Today, I would like to acknowledge our Champ Esona. We want to thank Esona’s parents for Esona. To us Buffalo City you are a winner. We are so proud of you, you are a brave young girl and we know that you will achieve…”

“Buffalo City contributed R24 000 towards Esona’s travelling expenses.”

Adding to that, Pastor Pam Daweti from BCM said, “Esona, you are blessed and your parents are very blessed to have a child like you. Arise and shine this is your season. There is more glory for your season than before. Do not fear, fix your eyes on Jesus …nothing is impossible with our God”.

Earlier, the budding swimmer’s proud mother Sandisiwe Sekeleni thanked the Metro for the sponsorship. “She has made us proud. We are very grateful. Esona is a very shy child but very good at sports. Thank you all so much for all the resources you have provided that made this journey possible …may the good Lord bless you all”.
