BRICS Summit: Ramaphosa to lead South African delegation
President Cyril Ramaphosa will be supported by a number of various ministers during the 12th BRICS Summit on Tuesday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the South African delegation during his participation in the virtual 12th BRICS Summit on Tuesday 17 November 2020.
The summit is an association of five major emerging countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which together represent about 42% of the global population, 23% of GDP, 30% of the world’s territory and 18% of global trade.
CONTRIBUTING TO THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF BRICS
The Summit will be chaired by President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation under the theme: “Partnership for Global Stability, Shared Security and Innovative Growth”.
The programme will include the traditional open Leaders’ Session where the heads of member states will address the Summit with the aim to contribute to its future direction.
“Leaders will be focused on strengthening intra-BRICS relations and mutually beneficial cooperation across the BRICS pillars of cooperation, namely, political and security, economic and finance, social, and people-to-people cooperation,” the presidency said in a statement.
FIGHTING UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND INEQUALITY
For this year’s Summit, some of the cooperation outcomes include;
- The adoption of a revised Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership (2020-2025);
- The adoption of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy;
- The extension of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Competition Law and Policy;
- First projects of the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform;
- An agreement on Cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation;
- The adoption of a Roadmap for BRICS Energy Cooperation; and
- The Launch of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance.
“South Africa’s membership of BRICS enables the country to employ additional and powerful tools in its fight to address the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality through increased trade, investment, tourism, capacity building, skills and technology transfers” the presidency added.
President Ramaphosa will be supported by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Naledi Pandor, Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni, Minister of State Security Ayanda Dlodlo, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel and Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize.
The summit is scheduled for 13:00-15:00 (SA Time) and 14:00-16:00 (Moscow time).
In other news, government will be hosting the third South Africa Investment Conference this week.
“The conference will demonstrate that South Africa remains an attractive investment destination, and will show the progress we are making to improve the business climate. It will build on the positive momentum in investment in the years before the onset of the COVID pandemic. Foreign direct investment flows into South Africa, for example, rose sharply from R26.8 billion in 2017 to R70.6 billion in 2018,” Ramaphosa said in his weekly letter.
