A 22-year-old woman tragically died after being caught in rip currents while swimming in front of the Views Hotel in Wilderness, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRi). A man, 18, who attempted to rescue her remains missing.

Details of the tragic incident at Wilderness Beach

The NSRi said both individuals involved in the incident are university students. The Wilderness Duty Crew and rescue swimmers, government EMS, and various other services were activated on Friday afternoon.

The 22-year-old student was located unresponsive beyond the backline of the waves, and despite efforts to save her life, she passed away in a hospital during the night.

“We believe that while a group of University students were swimming, rip currents may have developed in the surf. The students existed [sic] the water, but the female was caught in rip currents. The missing teenager had reportedly attempted to rescue her,” said NSRI Wilderness Station Commander Mike Vonk.

The search for the missing teenager continues with ongoing efforts from the Police Dive Unit, NSRI and George Fire and Rescue Services.

The missing teen is reportedly from Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape, and the deceased student is believed to have been from Gauteng.

“Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the female. Police have opened an Inquest docket.

“Family and friends of the missing teenager are in our care, and thoughts remain with them in this difficult time. Police have opened an investigation,” said NSRI.
