Cape Independence: Western Cape gains support to ‘breakaway’ from SA

There’s real momentum behind the Cape Independence campaign now, after SA’s fifth-largest political party said it would support ‘Western Cape secession’.

Blimey, things are getting a bit hectic in the south-west: The Cape Independence movement has been bolstered this week, after the DA said it would push to grant more powers to provinces across South Africa – including the Western Cape – so each region can hold referendums on matters of regional importance.

Cape Independence: Who is supporting it?

On top of the opposition’s desire for more ‘self-determination’ at a provincial level, AfriForum have also been evaluating a trip to the Constitutional Court, to essentially give the Western Cape the control it needs to host a vote on independence. In other words, they want voters in the province to decide if they should become a different country from SA.

While the notion sparks excitement in some, others are more pensive. The huge administrative upheaval, coupled with the threat of civil unrest and logistical nightmares, presents a challenge for those who are pro ‘CapeXit’.

The Western Cape as its own country: Well, it has backers…

The FF Plus, however, believe that ‘self-determination’ is a right that belongs to everyone in South Africa. They have reiterated their support for Cape Independence on Wednesday, encouraging the Western Cape to ‘cast off the ANC’.

It’s understood that certain regions of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape could join a breakaway nation, along with the DA-controlled province. However that may play out, the FF Plus will give their ‘full backing’ to the movement.

“The ANC must be kept out of government in the Western Cape at all costs and in order to achieve that, the minorities of the city and province must join hands. In its pursuit of various forms of self-determination in South Africa, the FF Plus will continue to lead from the front in the endeavour to obtain independence for the Cape.”

“It is an endeavour by the people of the Western Cape to cast off the yoke of ANC incompetence and gain more control over their own affairs – the FF Plus fully supports and agrees with this objective.”
