Now aged 17, a serial rapist who terrorised other children in Gauteng has officially been identified as the youngest offender of his kind in South Africa’s recorded history.

Who is South Africa’s youngest ever rapist?

The teenager, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, was found guilty in three separate cases last week – and the details are sickening. The offender targeted boys who were still in primary school, while operating in Katlehong.

All of the victims were aged between 8-10 years old. What’s even more unsettling is that these crimes were reported in 2020, meaning that South Africa’s youngest serial rapist was actually aged 15 at the time.

SAPS expose crimes of youngest ever serial rapist on record

Sergeant Renny Matshavha, a detective based at Katlehong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence (FCS) unit, was tasked with securing justice for the victims and their families. Despite the complex and gruesome nature of it all, Matshavha put together a devastating case, that left the defence with very little to go off.

  • SAPS issued a statement about the conviction, confirming some crucial details:

“The Gauteng Regional Court sitting in Palm Ridge sentenced a 17-year-old convicted serial rapist to 30 years’ imprisonment. The teenager is believed to be the youngest recorded serial rapist in the history of South Africa.”

“The teenage serial rapist was 15-years-old at the time when he raped three boys, aged between eight and 10-years-old, on three different occasions around Katlehong during the year of 2020.”

Detective, police officers praised for securing justice

The Acting Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of SAPS, Major General Girly Mbele, has described the resolution as a ‘bitter-sweet success’, and hailed Sergeant Matshavha for her ‘outstanding perseverance’:

“The sentence handed down to the 17-year-old convicted serial rapist is a bitter-sweet success. It cannot have been easy for Sergeant Matshavha to investigate a case whereby the perpetrator is a child, but she persevered in seeking justice for the three minor victims and their families.”
