A major oak has fallen in the world of wildlife conservation. Anton Mzimba, who had worked for 25 years in the Greater Kruger, was shot dead on Tuesday. Tributes have poured in from all corners of the world. Even Prince William, of the British Royal Family, has paid his respects.
Exact details of the killing still remain sketchy at this point.
Mzimba rose up the ranks at the Timbavati Private Game Reserve. He became their Head of Services in 2008, and carried out his duties with exceptionally high standards over a 14-year period. His efforts were recognised by Prince William back in 2021.
Prince William visited Microsoft HQ this afternoon to see how technology can help with the detection of illegal wildlife products.

The member of the monarchy, who is second-in-line to the throne behind his father Charles, hailed Mr. Mzimba as a ‘committed and brave’ ranger. He is demanding a ‘swift course of justice’, and extended his condolences to the grieving family.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn of the killing of Anton Mzimba who I spoke to in November. Committed and brave, rangers like Anton are central to the conservation of Africa’s fantastic wildlife. Those responsible must swiftly be brought to justice. My thoughts are with his family.”

Officials at the Timbavati Reserve posted a special message for one of their own yesterday. The heartfelt obituary detailed how Anton Mzimba gave his life to conservation efforts, defending rhinos from the barbaric ivory trade.
“We mourn the loss of Mr. Anton Mzimba, Head of Ranger Services, who dedicated 25 years of his life to the Timbavati. Our Greater Kruger landscape has not only lost a great man, but we have lost a special family member, a rhino warrior, a wildlife guardian, and a loved one.”
“Anton Mzimba was an exceptionally passionate, courageous, and spiritual man. Those who had the pleasure of meeting him, spending time with him and working with him, will know how he dedicated his life to what he believed in.”
