At 15:30 on Tuesday afternoon, Cyril Ramaphosa partially received the State Capture Report filed by Raymond Zondo – some three-and-a-half years after the DCJ began collecting his evidence on government-sponsored corruption.

What happens now the State Capture Report has been handed over?

Ramaphosa says the report will be made public ‘immediately after the handover’, meaning that millions of South Africans will be able to look through the evidence of wrongdoing themselves. However, there will be a few state capture stooges quaking in their boots this afternoon.

The details may go live today, but according to the court order of 28 December, the President will have until 30 June 2022 to submit the report to Parliament with an indication of his intentions regarding the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations.

State Capture Report released – and it’s bad news for this lot

It could be another six months or so before anyone is made to pay the price for their corrupt activities. But Lucky Montana and Dudu Myeni – both serving as top executives of PRASA and SAA at the peak of state capture – could be amongst the first people in the firing line.

That’s because part one of Zondo’s Report focuses specifically on the collapse of rail and air-based state-owned entities.

The collapse of both aforementioned businesses is largely attributed to state capture, and neither Montana nor Myeni were looked upon favourably when they appeared at the Zondo Commission.

SAA Technical and SA Express are also set to feature heavily in the first section of the State Capture Report. Therefore, witnesses like Vivien Natasen and Brian van Wyk may also be amongst those facing punishment before any other implicated souls.

“As the President indicated to the Court, only once the final installment has been received will it be possible to have complete sight of the report’s implications and to develop an implementation plan on the recommendations.”

“As confirmed during that last briefing of Cabinet, President Ramaphosa has decided that each part of the report will be released to the public immediately after it is submitted to the President by the Commission.”
