South African citizens are able to renew their Smart IDs or passports at a total of 27 bank branches. The Department of Home Affairs intends to increase the number of branches where the service is available.

Service could be extended to more banks in South Africa
According to BusinessTech, the Home Affairs banking pilot was expected to end on 31 March. However, the date has been extended to September 2023.
Currently, Home Affairs offers the service through six banks. Below is the breakdown:
- Standard Bank – 9
- FNB – 7
- Nedbank – 5
- ABSA – 4
- Discovery Bank – 1
- Investec – 1

At the bank branches, citizens can apply for, process and collect the documents. The service promises to be a breeze compared to the traditional trip to a Home Affairs office.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi reportedly said the department intends to open 43 more offices at bank branches in the country as soon as agreements were signed.
