From petty crook, to millionaire, to anti-illegal immigration crusader, to Mayor. Gayton McKenzie has lived many lives over the past few decades, but the Patriotic Alliance leader has surprised many by becoming the mayor of a Western Cape district this week.

Where has Gayton McKenzie been elected Mayor?

The controversial figure was sworn-in unopposed as the leader of the Central Karoo District on Monday. He becomes the second Patriotic Alliance Mayor to take office, after their first success was recorded in November 2021.

This, however, is arguably more significant. Gayton McKenzie carries an enormous public profile with him. Now he’s been elected into office, the politician – who was only sworn in as a councillor last week – has enjoyed a meteoric rise to localised power, and the celebrations were in full flow earlier today.

Patriotic Alliance gains another mayoral seat

The Patriotic Alliance are heavily against the presence of undocumented migrants in South Africa. The party, affiliated with the likes of Operation Dudula and Put South Africans First, also have a leader in Laingsburg. The district neighbours the Central Karoo, and is now ruled by Mayor John Smith.

Outside of the Western Cape, the PA have a swell of support in Gauteng – particularly in the suburb of Eldorado Park. Another well-known South African, Kenny Kunene, is the party’s deputy leader.

But, whether it’s ‘star appeal’ or a message that’s appealing to voters, the Patriotic Alliance are continuing on an upwards trajectory – and the political newcomers already have one eye on the 2024 Elections.
