Ramaphosa to address SA – when will the ‘final family meeting’ happen?

Nothing says ‘the pandemic is done’ quite like Cyril Ramaphosa delivering his final family meeting – and the address will take place soon…

Well, it’s been emotional. All signs are pointing to the end of our State of Disaster laws, almost two years after they were first introduced. It seems President Ramaphosa’s next lockdown address to the nation will be the last, bringing an end to the ‘family meeting’ format that became a staple of pandemic life.

What to expect from our final family meeting…

Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele confirmed over the weekend that another address is coming from Cyril, but he shared the details in a rather cryptic manner. According to the top ANC official…

  • The next COVID-19 family meeting is set to be the LAST, with no more addresses on the pandemic planned.
  • Ramaphosa will use the address to also ‘talk about something else’ – no further details were provided.
  • Some very light restrictions will be announced as ‘permanent’, which will be regulated by the National Health Act.

The last lockdown address is near

It’s been 24 months since the first case of COVID-19 was recorded on our shores. At the start, there was hope that South Africa could isolate its ‘patient zero’, and avoid the worse of the pandemic. Sadly, it wasn’t to be.

Multiple lockdowns, almost 100 000 confirmed virus deaths, the overwhelming of hospitals, and even a ban on cooked chickens followed. Cigarettes and alcohol were outlawed, as was visiting the beach. It’s been a wild, and sometimes terrifying ride. But it now appears we’ve reached the end of the line.

Ramaphosa set to address the nation: When will our next family meeting take place?

The State of Disaster officially expires on Tuesday 15 March. In all likeliness, a family meeting will take place ahead of that date. However, Ramaphosa has hinted that lockdown could be ended BEFORE then, without going into specifics.

Plenty of notice will need to be given before such a major change is instituted. That means an announcement could come before next weekend, with instructions about the end date of lockdown to be communicated clearly.

  • Whatever happens, a final family meeting would go a long way towards closing the book on a traumatic chapter for SA…
