What happens when WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram’s servers go down failing millions of users worldwide?

The world rushes over to Twitter to find out just exactly what’s going on with their favourite apps and the result is a rush of hilarious celebratory memes making light of the technological failure at WhatsApp which has led to a huge relief from some as it means a break from work, and to social isolation for others, who rely on the app to communicate with friends and loved ones across Mzansi and the rest of the world.

WhatsApp was trending on Twitter on Monday night with 2,4 million tweets globally, while #deletefacebook was trending in South African with 39 300 Tweets. Mxit, remember that old app, also seems to have made a comeback, trending with 1305 Tweets.

Tweeps shared a flurry of memes celebrating the technological breakdown which happened at around 5pm SA time and that led to a mass migration of people using Twitter on Monday.

@Updateboyx noted the rush of users to Twitter: “Loader, Middleman, job owner, WhatsApp bag plug, shoe plugs, olosho, slay queen, drug dealer, CashApp seller, iTunes vendors, Bitcoin people, Everybody on their way to Twitter and Snapchat to know what’s going with Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp/messenger”.

@hm_rye joked:  “I mean it’s okay if Instagram and Facebook and WhatsApp are down since it’s not tik tok”

A provocative @Alitabelle Tweeted: “WhatsApp and Facebook have gone down on you, is it my turn next?”

@SavvyRinu was concerned that some unwanted users would join Twitter and stay: “My prayer is for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp issues to be resolved quickly. African parents must not find this Twitter app.”

On a more serious note Edward Snowden  @Snowden Tweeted: “Facebook-owned Whatsapp being down is a reminder that you and your friends should probably be using a more private, non-profit alternative like  @Signalapp  anyway (or another open-source app of your choice).  It’s just as free, and takes like 30 seconds to switch.”

And both WhatsApp and Facebook also turned to Twitter to speak to its users about the outage.

WhatApp said via its Twtter account that it was working hard to resolve the issue that was preventing millions of users from communicating with friends, families and colleagues:

“We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!”

Facebook’s spokesperson Andy Stone also apologies on Twitter for the system failure.

“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience,” he said.
