We know many of us will be in a rush to get to the fuel pumps before Wednesday’s big price increase. But the driver of this oil tanker on the N3 near Durban is wholly taking the piss. The marauding motorist was filmed doing 123km/h in the fast lane of the highway.

Petrol and diesel price for South Africa, November 2022

By all means, we’ve already had an oil-related scare this week. The petrol price is going up by more than 50 cents-per-litre on Wednesday, and diesel is set to soar by R1.44p/l. The sight of a speeding tanker barrelling down the N3, therefore, isn’t the scariest thing we see on Halloween…

Naughty, naughty! Speeding oil tanker caught on camera

A video shared by the good folks at SA Trucker captures the scarcely-believable incident. A car travelling below the speed limit notices that the abnormal vehicle to their right is clocking-up an ungodly speed. The driver then pushed their car past the 120km/h mark…

The truck continues to pull away, only to eventually ease-off the gas towards the end of the video. But wait, there’s more! A photo from inside the cab revealed that the driver had a number of empty liquor bottles to hand.

Dramatic exchange on N3 leads to trucker’s arrest

Incredibly, the people filming the incident were also instrumental in holding this driver to account. The man behind the wheel of the oil tanker was arrested after pulling off the N3, after the concerned citizens parked in front of him at a set of traffic lights, and alerted police to the situation.

Police offers were eventually able to gain access to the cab, after their suspect initially refused to comply. The drama played out on Sunday afternoon, near Pavilion Mall. The man is expected to be processed by the courts later this week.
