There are many things pedestrians have to be aware of on the streets of Johannesburg when it’s dark – but flying taxis aren’t usually one of them. However, this bemused onlooker had to think fast on Thursday evening…

Taxi crash in Johannesburg

The incident, which took place on the corner of Mooi Street, shows one taxi speeding across an intersection. Another minibus can be seen pacing its way steadily across the junction, and unfortunately, their paths collided.

Approaching from the left, one vehicle slams head-first into the side of his fellow taxi driver. This forces both of the motors off the road, heading in the same direction. A startled pedestrian is alerted by the sounds of grinding metal, and without a second to lose, takes evasive action.

One car ploughs into a set of traffic lights and a shop front, whereas the second taxi mounts the curb and hits a kiosk. The pedestrian in question is, by this point, safely out of harm’s way, after fleeing into the carriageway.

Pedestrian flees, as traffic lights tumble

The video has been viewed thousands of times online, with many scarcely being able to believe what they’ve witnessed. The reckless driving, the narrow escape… and even the casual reaction from other passers-by have all caused a stir amongst social media users. The footage was uploaded late on Thursday evening.

According to a time-stamp on the clip itself, this incident took place on 23 September 2021, at 19:19. The mean streets of Johannesburg can be tricky to navigate at the best of times, so the last thing any local needs is to see the road system descend into a budget version of Grand Theft Auto. Thankfully, no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
