The Free State police are investigating an alleged double murder committed by a 30-year-old man in Viljoenskroon in the early hours of Saturday, 14 May.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Malebo Khosana said the suspect went to his ex-lover’s house at approximately 3:55.
At the house, the man allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and bludgeoned her teenage son’s head with a hammer before fleeing the scene.
“The suspect alleged he thought the son was the current boyfriend to the ex-girlfriend,” said Khosana.
The 34-year-old mother and her 14-year-old son were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The investigating officer, Constable Masilo Moreki, asked community members who the suspect was and eventually, his whereabouts were discovered.
The man was arrested and is expected to appear before the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 18 May, on a murder charge.
